The Canvas and the Masterpiece: Why Your Wedding Makeup Starts with Skincare

Ask any professional stylist and they will tell you the same thing. The secret to a gorgeous wedding look isn't the expensive foundation you buy. It starts with how you treat your skin months before the big day.

If you don't look after the canvas, you can’t create a masterpiece.

I am a huge advocate for skincare as the foundation of any flawless look. When a bride enters my studio for a trial, the first thing I ask about is her routine. It isn't enough to just apply makeup. I want to understand your skin and use my experience to help you improve your glow from the inside out.

1. Identify Your Skin Type

It sounds basic, but knowing your skin type is the only way to buy the right products. Are you combination? Sensitive? Oily and flaky at the same time? Do you deal with redness or large pores?

There is a huge range of skin types, so take the time to observe yours. If you are unsure, ask a professional. Whether it’s a stylist, a beautician, or a dermatologist, getting an expert opinion early on saves you time and money.

2. Seek Expert Advice

While I can provide the groundwork for a solid routine, problem skin like acne or rosacea requires a specialist. A dermatologist can help with medical concerns, but always use your intuition. If a prescribed product isn't working for you, don't be afraid to keep searching for your "holy grail" solution.

I personally prefer products that are as natural as possible. We come into contact with so many chemicals every day, so reducing the load on your face is always a good idea.

3. The Power of Exfoliation

Our skin production starts to slow down once we hit our thirties. Our cells don't generate as efficiently, which means we need to help the skin shed dead cells.

Exfoliation is key here. It clears away flakiness and brightens your complexion. While once a week is fine in your twenties, I recommend exfoliating two to three times a week as you get older. This is vital for your wedding day. If you apply foundation to flaky skin, the product will grab onto those patches and become obvious. There is no quick fix for this on the morning of the wedding, so consistency is your best friend.

4. Treat Different Zones Differently

The skin on your face is not a single entity. You might have dry patches on your forehead and an oily T-zone. You should treat these areas with different products. Use a heavier cream where you are dry and a lighter one where you are oily. Don't forget your lips, either. Use a lanolin balm to let the hydration really penetrate, and give them a light exfoliation as well.

5. Be Kind to Your Skin

The secret to youthful skin is simply being gentle with it.

  • Never sleep in makeup: This is the quickest way to damage your skin and your eyelashes.

  • Hydrate: We are made mostly of water. If you are dehydrated, your skin will show it first.

  • Sun Protection: Use an SPF daily. Protecting yourself from the sun is the most effective "anti-aging" step you can take.

  • Manage Stress: Stress has a profound effect on your complexion. Take time for yourself to relax as the wedding approaches.

We only get one face, so we have to look after it. If you have questions about prepping your skin for your Roman wedding, I am always happy to help.
